One man, one voice, one search and a great revolution.





If you still don't know about Sugarman a.k.a Rodriguez is an American singer, songwriter from Michigan. Well, this much information you may easily find on wikipedia. But what's so special about his story, you may question.

Well, Sixto Diaz Rodriguez popularly know as Rodriguez is a great singer running behind time. Oh so now we relate, huh?


Rodriguez was a singer in the same era as Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens but he wasn't in the limelight as them. His journey started in 1967 when he released a single named "I'll slip away" after which he went on a hiatus of 3 years post which his revolutionary albums "Cold Fact (1970) " and "Coming From Reality (1971) was released by Sussex Records. His albums didn't recieve any popularity or fandom in America. Midway recording his third album, Rodriguez was taken off the Sussex Records label and his incomplete album still remains incomplete.His live concerts weren't welcomed as much. Rejected, unaware and feeling dejected Rodriguez stopped his music career and moved back to his hometown, Detroit.


The special part about Rodriguez's music was that it was rebellious, revolutionary and took a political stance against the situation of the poor. The same time when American rejected Rodriguez's golden music, the Africans waiting for a revolution finally found their inspiration.


When Rodriguez's music was imported to South Africa, it went platinum by inspiring and enlightening millions of Africans during the aprathied era. Suddenly, the common people of Africa felt they had a voice and the right to take a stand against themsleves, against their nation and Rodriguez's songs became Anti Apartheid Anthems.

A man rejected in America, now became a hero of millions. He talked of emotions the marginalized, the exploited, he violated classes of the society felt. So, the real devotees of Rodriguez went on a search. THE SEARCH FOR SUGARMAN.
